January of records: result of optimism with economy, promotions and Cataratas Day

The airport and the attractions of Foz do Iguaçu closed the first month of the year with a movement above the expectation.See the main factors that contributed to this result.


A number of factors explain why the International Airport and the attractions of Foz do Iguaçu have closed with historic monthly records of movement.Among them, the expectation of improving the economic situation of Brazil, the dissemination of research that shows the excellent cost-benefit ratio of hotels, spontaneous positive media throughout the year and the promotion of Cataratas Day 2016, which reached 140 million people all over the world.


In relation to the growth of the number of Brazilian visitors, Gilmar Piolla, who is also secretary-general of the Economic and Social Development Council of Foz do Iguaçu (Codefoz), has a very simple explanation:“Foz do Iguaçu became a national unanimity.”


There was also greater movement of foreign tourists, according to data from the Federal Police.In total, about 150 thousand visitors from other countries, especially from Argentina, visited Foz do Iguaçu, 20 thousand more than in the same month of 2016. The biggest contribution in this case is the exchange rate, which continues to be favorable for tourists mainly from neighboring countries.


Arrivals and Departures


The International Airport of Foz do Iguaçu recorded, in January, the best monthly passenger movement in its history.There were 229,313 arrivals and departures, 17.54% more than the number registered in January 2016 and 26.09% higher than the result of December last year.


Throughout last year, the airport received 1,851,116 passengers, considering arrivals and departures, on a monthly average of 154,000 passengers.The terminal has capacity for 2.8 million arrivals and departures.


Bus Station


The result was surprising even at the Foz do Iguaçu bus station, which is undergoing renovation after its operation was delivered to the private sector.In January, 109,857 passengers used the terminal, compared to 88,144 in January last year and 91,399 in the first month of 2015.


The Falls and Itaipu


In January of this year, 216,465 tourists visited Iguaçu Falls, surpassing by 2.2% the historical record of January 2015, when the Iguaçu National Park received 211,076 visitors.In comparison with January 2016, when the Falls received 201,076 tourists the result was even greater: an increase of 8%.


At the Itaipu plant, the sum of institutional and paid visits in January resulted in 115,817 visitors.The Itaipu Tourist Complex, which manages the attractiveness of the Brazilian margin of the plant, registered 76,745 visitors, of whom 63,855 were Brazilians (5% growth).


The attractiveness of the plant with the highest growth in demand was Kattamaram (10,131 people, 85% more than in January 2016), thanks to the promotion that reduced the price for those who make the panoramic tour and the boat trip in the reservoir.The Bela Vista Biological Refuge, which was also benefited by a promotional campaign, received 4,166 visitors, 53% more than in the same month last year.


Bird Park


Another highlight in Foz do Iguaçu, the Bird Park, had the best result for January since its creation 22 years ago.There were 92,704 visitors.The expectation for this year is at least repeat the numbers of 2016, considered satisfactory by the direction of the park.




Gilmar Piolla estimates that the January numbers are the result of a conjunction of factors.One of them “is the demonstration of confidence of Brazilians in the resumption of economic development, because inflation and interest rates have fallen.”For foreigners, the exchange rate is more favorable than at the beginning of 2016. And for Brazilians, the fall of the dollar to a level close to R$3.00 helped to reactivate shopping tourism in Ciudad del Este (Paraguay) and Puerto Iguazu (Argentina).


But that’s not all, Piolla recalls.Other factors include “the spontaneous media boom throughout 2016” and the promotion of Cataratas Day in November, which reached 140 million people worldwide.There is also the result of surveys, one of which has shown the excellent cost-effectiveness of Foz do Iguaçu hotels and another indicated that almost 100% of travelers who know the city intend to return.This contributes to a positive and spontaneous propagation in social networks as well.


For the year


Throughout this year, the trend is to continue the growth in the number of visitors, both by the factors already mentioned and by a special detail: the number of long holidays, the “big holidays”.In all, there will be ten holidays or national optional points, which allow travelers to choose destinations such as Foz do Iguaçu, where the minimum necessary time to visit the attractions is two or three days.
