Foz of Shopping

The three cities of the tri-point border – Foz do Iguaçu, Puerto Iguazú (Argentina) and Ciudad del Este (Paraguay) – form an enormous shopping center, possibly unparalleled anywhere in the world due to its diversity, characteristics and quality. But the first point worth highlighting is the regional handcrafts.

Inherited from the Guarani Indians and mixed with the cultures of the people who colonized the border region with the arrival of white men, regional handcrafts are sold in specialized centers and even in the streets and at fairs.

Pieces include everything from mats, bags, necklaces and hammocks to precious and semiprecious stones, as well as items in ceramics, glass, recyclable material and coated paper.

In the specialized handcraft stores, visitors also find replicas, in a range of materials, of the region's attractions, such as the Itaipu Power Plant, Iguassu Falls and the Friendship and Tancredo Neves bridges.

The handcrafts produced by Ñandeva are deserving of special mention. It is a program for the development of local handcrafts, which, with the support of Itaipu, strives to strengthen tri-national identity in the border region of Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay.

Pieces by Ñandeva are found at the store the program runs in the Itaipu Visitor Reception Center (VRC) and the handcraft cooperative store in the west and southeast of Paraná.

Handcrafts and souvenirs are also on sale in another store located at the Itaipu VRC and the Iguassu National Park, too.

Tourists can find exclusive collections, with designs that represent the beauty of the park. Part of the revenue obtained with the sale of souvenirs, in the National Park, is reverted into actions to protect local biodiversity.

Shopping in Foz do Iguaçu

Commerce in Foz do Iguaçu is highlighted by JL Shopping, center covering 61,000 m2 spread over three floors, home to over 140 stores, four cinemas and even a supermarket.

The shopping center was added to the city’s traditional trade, chiefly located on Avenida Brasil and its parallel and transversal streets, where consumers can acquire good nationally and internationally branded goods.

There are a number of noteworthy stores in the city center, too. Such is the case of Capoani, which offers international labels like Hugo Boss, Ermenegildo Zegna and Diesel, as well as national brands like Forum and Zoomp.

Modas Alice offers ready-to-wear and designer clothing. For footwear and bags, good options are Keiko, Datelli and Calçados Rosa.

The center of Foz also plays host to a number of other stores deserving of mention, such as Bambina women’s wear -, Colcci, women’s wear, bags and accessories —, Sadi Magazin — men’s wear, and Mariah Acessórios.

Shopping in Argentina

In Puerto Iguazú, in Argentina, the strong point of trade is clothing and leather goods. There are great clothing stores in general and fairs selling olives, oils and cheese, the country’s traditional goods.

A little before the Argentine customs point is a Duty Free Shop, selling goods from all over the world, such as beverages, clothing, accessories, jewelry, toys and perfumes.

For wine lovers, Puerto Iguazú offers specialized stores, selling products from the very best harvests. Argentine wines offer a great cost-benefit ratio compared to wines from other nations.

Shopping in Ciudad del Este

The third busiest commercial center in the world, behind only Miami and Hong Kong, in Ciudad del Este the shopping centers and stores occupy a major part of the city center, the second largest in Paraguay.

Brazilian tourists are able to make purchases of up to US$ 300, tax free, in Paraguay. If the shopping exceeds this amount, tax is charged on the excess.
